On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, on November 25th, ELIAMEP publishes a Policy brief by Dr. Triantafyllos Karatrantos, Research Fellow.
- According to the UN, 35% of women worldwide have suffered domestic or sexual violence.
- According to the EU, one in ten women has been subjected to online sexual harassment since the age of 15.
- During the pandemic and especially during the restrictive measures phase, calls to victim support lines increased fivefold.
- A very significant number of incidents are not reported.
- The woman, the child, the elderly, the vulnerable seek protection in the family, not exploitation and violence.
- The elimination of violence against women, but also violence in general, is primarily a matter of culture.· The change of culture needs the cooperation of all actors, public and private.
- States and societies must become the voice of the victims.
- In modern national security states there can be no such separation between low and high intensity violence.
- Prevention of violence requires a political, operational and social chain of coordination.
- Prevention is not a narrow state affair; it is a key dynamic of a healthy and participatory civil society.
