Presentation in the European Parliament “Win some, lose some: China’s involvement in the extractive and raw materials industries in the Western Balkans” – Ana Krstinovska

Ana Krstinovska had the honour of presenting the research she conducted for the CHOICE platform – China Observers in Central and Eastern Europe in the European Parliament in Brussels.

The study she co-authored with Vuk Vuksanovic, “Win some, lose some: China’s involvement in the extractive and raw materials industries in the Western Balkans” was supported by the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament and specifically MEP Viola Von Cramon-Taubadel. It sheds light about China’s role in the race for critical raw materials in the Western Balkans, showcasing the level and intensity of WB-Chinese investment and trade ties, as well as Chinese interest for critical raw materials in the region. This pioneering study is the first comprehensive research on China’s activities in the extractive and raw materials industries in the region which shows the need for greater awareness and policy improvements in this area, providing recommendations for specific steps to be undertaken by the national governments, EU institutions and civil society.
