Obviously, the main protagonist and hero in the political drama currently playing out in France is the country’s President, Emmanuel Macron. He has, of course, suffered multiple defeats; his tragedy is that these have not stemmed from the failure of his program to reform France. On the contrary, to quote the Economist: “His seven years as president have seen a sustained effort to remake France as a modern, business-friendly economy”.
