An opinion article by Ioannis Armakolas in the newspaper TA NEA analyses the complex political developments in North Macedonia following the swearing in of the nationalist VMRO-DPMNE administration and the escalation in its bilateral relations with Greece.
Armakolas explains the goals and aspirations of the new government and analyses the formation of the government coalition with the weak and unstable Albanian VLEN coalition.
On bilateral relations between Greece and North Macedonia, he stresses that Greece’s interest relates to the use of the country’s constitutional name, a position in which it has the unwavering support of both the EU and the US. For this reason, Greece must invest in diplomatic capital in order to maintain an united international front critical of the government of North Macedonia. In addition, he argues that Greece must also comply with the letter and spirit of the agreement in order to be convincing.
Finally, regarding the possibility of an appeal to the International Court of Justice, he says that this would have consequences for both sides.
