This specific research project aimed at exploring the state of bilateral political and diplomatic relations between Greece and Bulgaria and determining their future prospects and trends of evolution in the context of various destabilizing factors such as the long-lasting economic crisis in Greece, the refugee and migrant crisis, and more generally the transformation of Greece in the Balkan region.
The project study offered an overview of relations between the two countries for the period after the end of the Cold War. Among the issues tackled in the report were diplomatic relations and bilateral problems and disputes, economic relations, energy and infrastructure questions, as well as social attitudes and media representations. The authors of the study stressed that relations between Greece and Bulgaria could be considered a Balkan “success story” and a factor of stability for the wider region. In a period when instability and uncertainty in the Balkans were on the rise, Greece and Bulgaria should have strengthened their multiple relations.
