The SMILE project is part of the broader Pathways2Resilience (P2R) programme (CINEA GA 101093942), a programme supporting the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.

Small islands, such as Ithaki and Skiathos, face heightened vulnerability to climate change due to extreme weather events, rising sea levels, earthquakes, and limited resources like freshwater and arable land. Climate-induced impacts strain their ecosystems, jeopardizing food security, infrastructure and economic sectors such as tourism and agriculture. These challenges are compounded by limited adaptive capacity and social vulnerabilities, demanding urgent action to enhance resilience and support sustainable development.

The Municipalities of Ithaki and Skiathos, together with ELIAMEP and the Climate Change Hub with the support of its founding partner Resilient Cities Catalyst, will undertake a process of designing individual Climate Resilience Strategies and Implementation Investment Plans, under the P2R framework, through a number of capacity building workshops, joint expert meetings and inter-regional working groups.

The project aims to equip Ithaki and Skiathos with essential tools and strategies for developing climate resilience pathways, drawing on best practices and experiences, thus enhancing the capacity of public authorities, local communities, and other stakeholders to address climate-related challenges effectively. Citizen engagement will play a crucial role in co-designing adaptation pathways, fostering community ownership and participation in resilience-building efforts. Through collaboration and knowledge exchange facilitated by the project, the two islands are poised to strengthen their resilience to climate change impacts and contribute to broader regional and EU adaptation objectives.
