“Athens meets Detroit: The importance of civic engagement and social accountability” is the subject of the event organized under the Sponsorship Program of the German Marshall Fund of the United States “Transatlantic Initiative: Alumni Network Leadership Actions” with the support of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) and the US Embassy in Athens.

The event was held in English on Monday, 25th of September (15:00 – 20:00) at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, at the Book Castle of the National Library of Greece. The entrance was free.

Opening remarks were made by the Ambassador Geoffrey R. Pyatt, US Embassy in Athens – who highlighted the power of civic engagement and social accountability, especially during an economic crisis- and Dr. Thanos Dokos, General-Director, Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP).

Furthermore, the role of private institutions and the involvement of private sector in society were discussed, while special mention was made to the practices, models and strategies that can be implemented and are key factors for economic and social recovery.

Finally, during the conference, the establishment of the Athens Women’s Leadership Network (which will be associated with the Detroit Women’s Network) was announced.
